9 sleep habits around the world that could help you catch a few mora zzzs9 sleep habits around the world that could help you catch a few more zzzsThey say what happens in thebedroomstays in the bedroom, but when it comes to sleep, theres a lot we could learn from other peoples habits - especially people in different cultures. If youve evertraveled abroad, you may have seen firsthand how different getting your nightly shut-eye can look in another country. And though some foreign bedtime rituals may initially strike us as a bit odd, its quite possible that trying one (or several) of them could result in a better nights sleep, so here are nine new sleep habits around the world.1. Japan Nap on the job.In Japanese culture, falling asleep at work, on public transit, or even at a dinner party isconsidered totally legit. The idea goes that you must be working so diligently that youve exhausted yourself - so instead of being perceived as disrespectful, you might even be lauded for your indu striousness. Dozing off in public is such a common practice that it even has its own term inemuri, which literally means sleeping while present. While it may not be acceptable in American culture to conk out mid-meeting or over dessert with friends, we could all stand to work in more naps.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more2. Spain Take an afternoon siesta.Speaking of naps, the siesta has long been a quintessential tradition of Spanish culture. Though this afternoon rest break may be waning in popularity as Spain becomes more urbanized, its benefits remain. When kept relatively short - under 90 minutes - power napsincrease performance and reaction time and improve mood.3. China Sleep on a firm bed.In China, its a popular belief that a firm bed supports the alignment of the back, promoting better sleep. (Even in the US, many people swear by sleeping on a harder surface to ease ba ck pain.) To find out firsthand if firmer support could lead to better nights, check out Brooklyn BeddingsPlank, the mattress for sleepers who can never find a mattress firm enough.4. United Kingdom Snooze in the nude.Could sleeping in the buff be the key to waking up refreshed? A significant portion of Brits believes so. When surveyed as part of2013 International Bedroom Pollconducted by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), 30 percent of people in the UK said they go to bed in their birthday suits (as opposed to just 12 percent of Americans). Since reduced body temperature signals to your brain that its time to rest, ditching the PJs could truly make a difference for quality and quantity of sleep.5. Europe Trade the top sheet for a duvet. If youre not into sleeping nude - cause that can definitely get awkward fast if you have kids or roommates - Europeans have another cooling method worth considering. Its extremely common in Europe to sleep with just a duvet with a removable, wash able cover, rather than the top sheet and comforter most Americans use Eliminating that layer of cloth helps keep the temperature down in bed.6. Belgium Be early to bed and early to rise.Timereportsthat Belgian women have the distinction of going to bed earliest of all countries they surveyed. Apparently, this is a healthy habit People who turn in earlier show alower risk of early deaththan night owls, and they may bemore likelyto maintain a healthy weight.7. Japan Sleep solo. The NSF survey found that less than two-thirds of Japanese people who are married or living with a partner sleep together, and more than a quarter sleepentirelyalone (not even sharing with pets or kids). If you have a loved one to snuggle with, sleeping in separate beds may sound like a throwback from 1950s TV shows, but research shows the Japanese may be on to something. Over a quarter of peoplereport getting a more restful nightwhen they turn in alone (and that percentage is even higher for women).8. Mexico E ngage in some late-night mindfulness.Nightly wind-down rituals - whether prayer, meditation, or quietly reading a book - are all part of healthy sleep hygiene. Working in a few moments of peaceful pre-bedtime reflection, like nearly two-thirds of Mexicans surveyed by the NSF do by meditating or praying, might help you drift off more easily.9. Netherlands Add a few extra minutes. And the award for most sleep goes to the Netherlands According toa 2016 studyin the journalScience Advances, the Dutch outrank all other countries, averaging eight hours and five minutes per night. (The Americans clock in at seven hours and 52 minutes, a difference of close to a quarter-hour.) While the gap between Dutch and American may not seem that large, given that more sleep is associated with moremental agility, improved immunity, andbetter mental health, getting just a few minutes of extra sleep per night can add up to major benefits. 5 skills you should highlight on your resume

5 skills you should highlight on your resume5 skills you should highlight on your resume75% of CEOs say that a skilled, educated and adaptable workforce should be a priority for a business. As the number of applicants per corporate job opening rises, its important that your resume is effective at articulating your accomplishments and what you can bring to the table. This means creating an accomplishment-based resume instead of a responsibility based resume and creating a document that is completely unique to you.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreEvery person will have a different resume based on a different skillset, however, there are five skills you should highlight on your resume regardless of your industry. Note that your resume should reflect each skill byhighlighting what youve achieved instead of simply stating that you hold a certain skill. For example, dont say that youre results-oriented. Instead, show your resultsAdaptabilityResearch suggests that CEOs now rank adaptability and collaboration on a par with traditional skills such as problem-solving and risk management.Due to the rise of startups and small businesses, employees are often required to wear many hats, work with cross-functional teams, and adapt to the role as situations arise. As a job seeker, these are crucial skills that you want to highlight. Instead of writing adaptable on your resume, show employers how you have adapted to various situations. For example, you could say something along the lines ofHired as an administrative assistant, and served as an editorial assistant while managing social media postings, website content, and liaising with contributors to organize submissions. This highlights your ability to go above and beyond your role, and shows that you adapted based on company needs.CollaborationAccording to a recent study done byThe Institute for Corporate Productivity (i4cp) , collaboration is highly correlated with market performance, and high performing organizations are five and a half times more likely to encourage and reward teams for collaboration.A great way to highlight collaboration on your resume is to discuss group projects you worked on, if you worked with any other departments or teams, and how many people you worked with. The more you can quantify and illustrate your collaboration at work, the betterWant to learn even more about how collaboration can benefit you?Check out the podcast Stop, Collaborate, and ListenbyBailyHancockLeadershipIts no surprise that leadership is a key skill to highlight if you can, because leadership impacts almost every sector of business. A great leader can motivate employees and increase productivity, while bad leadership can taint morale and have a huge negative impact. Leadership makes such a big difference that49% of CEOs are changing their talent strategy to focus on the leadership pipeline so that they can help attract, retain and engage the staff needed to remain relevant and competitive. If you do have leadership capabilities, its crucial to highlight them. Discuss any opportunities youve had for leadership, both large and small, and make sure to discuss the results of your leadership. Showing that your leadership was effective and had good results is what will make an impact when youre applying to jobs.Problem SolvingWhen a company is hiring, they are looking for a solution to a problem they have. Whether the problem is that they recently lost an employee, or they want to improve a sector of business, everything always comes down to problem-solving. If you can show a potential employer how you will be a solution to their problem, thats how you will land the job.For an easy way to put together your thoughts and gather information about what problems youve solved and how you solved them, create SOAR stories (Situation, Obstacle, Action and Result) for yourself. You can then use this in formation to highlight your problem-solving skills on your resume, or even during an interview.Tech SavvyReports show that there were2.80 billion global social media users in 2017, and71% of consumerswho have had a good social media service experience with a brand are likely to recommend it to others. This suggests that social media is more important than ever in business. If you have the technical skills and abilities to run, analyze, or improve social media reach, highlight it on your resume.Additionally, its crucial to highlight any software knowledge you have. Anything from Adobe platforms to QuickBooks, to Google applications, can come in handy when youre applying for a job. If you have the tech skills, make sure to list them on your resume. Often recruiters or hiring managers will do a keyword search for specific software or applications to see what tech skills a candidate holds. If you dont have the software listed, you wont come upon the keyword search which could put you ou t of the running._____________Your resume should articulate what youve accomplished and what you can bring to a new role, and that will look different for everyone, however, there are five skills you should highlight on your resume regardless of your industry Adaptability, collaboration, leadership problem solving, and tech-savvy.This article first appeared on Write Style.

One office space was filled with plants, including installations on the walls while the other office space was left as it was. Satisfaction levels were measured at three-month intervals.Curiously enough, the participants who worked in the greener rooms reported that same degree of stress as the group occupying the bare offices, yet they took 20% f ewer days off. The only definitive-consistent effect induced by the plant life was a 5% increase in air moisture on average and a 17% increase during winter.Ladderspreviously reported on the documented positive role plant life plays on purifying air They can remove up to 80-90%volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including substances such as formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene.Additional studies have proven that plant life greatly boosts productivity. Intellectual Property Law and Copyright Protection

Intellectual Property Law and Copyright ProtectionIntellectual Property Law and Copyright ProtectionIntellectual property law mostly involves copyrights, patents, and trademarks that are used to legally protect the output of all kinds of creative people. The right of publicity, which involves protecting the image and name of a person, and trade secrets, which are sensitive pieces of business infassonation that a competitor might want to exploit for its own purposes, also fall under the umbrella of intellectual property law. According to the U.S. Copyright Office (USCO), a copyright can be used to prevent someone from copying or using without consent the following types of artistic endeavors Literary worksMusical works, including any accompanying wordsDramatic works, including any accompanying musicPantomimes and choreographic worksPictorial, graphic, and sculptural worksMotion pictures and other audiovisual worksSound recordings, which are works that result from the fixation of a ser ies of musical, spoken, or other soundsArchitectural works Those broad categories can be broken down into more-specific examples such as poetry, streaming audio, and video, video games, paintings, and software code. The creative work must be published, on paper or electronically, or otherwise fixed in a tangible form of expression. That could mean a recording of a dance performance or a sculpture that has been constructed based on an artists sketches. What Does a Copyright Grant the Owner? The USCO says a copyright gives the owner the exclusive rights to Reproduce the workPrepare derivative works based upon the workDistribute- by sale, rental, lease, or lending- copies of the work to the publicPerform the work publicly (if applicable)Display the work publicly (if applicable)Authorize others to exercise these exclusive rights, subject to certain statutory limitations What Doesnt Copyright Protect? A copyright cant be used for something intangible, such as a story a woman tell s her grandchildren over lunch thats overheard by a writer of short fiction whos sitting at the next table in the restaurant. Titles pseudonyms company, group, or product names and advertising slogans cannot be copyrighted, though they may be protected in some other way, such as by a trademark. The specific design of a logo for a company can be copyrighted, but the name of the company can legally be used by others in a different way. Copyright does not protect ideas- only the form of expression of an idea. If you write a book about how to make millions in the foreign exchange market, someone else can write another book about that same idea they just have to use their own words instead of yours. Plots- a person falls in love with someone, loses that someone, and wins that someone back- cant be copyrighted. Neither, according to LegalZoom, can facts, common or public information, government publications, lists of ingredients (though the text of a recipe describing how to use the ingre dients to prepare the particular dish can be), the text of laws and court opinions, typefaces, or the design of everyday objects like scissors. Multiple Creators and Works Made for Hire Copyrights are more complicated when there are multiple creators or someone is hired to make a creative work for the person who will own the copyright. According to the USCO, when two or more people collaborate on a unified project, they are joint authors and neithers contribution can be separated from the work. If multiple people contribute to a collective work made of distinct parts, each authors contribution and copyright are distinct from the copyright ownership for the entire work. When a work is made for hire, the person who created the work relinquishes copyright to the hiring party either because the person 1) is employed by a company to create copyrighted works for it or 2) has entered into a contract with a company or individual to create the work. Should an Owner Register Their Copy right? Copyright automatically applies to your creative work as soon it comes into existence and is fixed in a tangible medium. However, LegalZoom recommends registering your work with the USCO for several reasons. Ability to Sue for Copyright Infringement The Copyright Act of 1976 requires copyright owners to register with the USCO before they can file an infringement suit in federal court. Proper Public Notice of Copyright Registration establishes a public record of a copyright and prevents someone from claiming they were unaware a work was copyrighted. Registration also enables the author to use the word Copyright, the copyright symbol , or the abbreviation Copr. on their work. Damages and Attorneys Fees If you register your work before someone infringes on your copyright, the infringer can be liable for both statutory damages and attorneys fees. If you dont register your work, the infringer can be liable only for actual damages and profits. Prima Facie Evidence and a Permanent Record Your registration certificate from the USCO isconsidered to be prima facie evidence of the validity of your copyright. That means, in the event of a trial, the infringer must prove they have some legal right to the work. Registration also provides a permanent record of your copyright, and the certificate can be duplicated by the USCO if it is s-lost or destroyed. The certificate can also be given to the buyer of your copyrighted work of art or passed on to a beneficiary after your death. Royalty Payments In the case of recorded music, registration enables you to collect royalty payments from those who make authorized use of your works. Can Copyright Be Transferred? A copyright owner can transfer some or all of their rights to another party by a written agreement. If the original owner chooses, they may later terminate the transfer. How Long Does Copyright Protection Last? For works created by a single author on or after January 1, 1978, copyright lasts for a term of 7 0 years after the authors death. In the case of multiple authors, the copyright lasts until 70 years after the last surviving authors death. For works made for hire or anonymously or pseudonymously, copyright lasts for a term of 95 years from publication or 120 years from creation, whichever is shorter. For works created and published or registered before January 1, 1978, copyright lasts until at least December 31, 2047.

When you have team that feels like your tribe, that youd go to battle with any day, that you know you can count on and that you hope can depend on you - its not as big a deal if you make the right decisions, he continues. So long as the right people are in the room, youll figure it out. Maybe more importantly, you cant read the book without being grateful to those who laid the foundation for us to live as we do and remember that the stress we feel is minor compared to what others face.Crucial Conversations Taking Stakes SecondWant to become a better public - or not-so-public - speaker? I couldnt shop for 3 months and it was the financial refresh I needed

I couldnt shop for 3 months and it was the financial refresh I neededI couldnt shop for 3 months and it was the financial refresh I neededNo one thought I could do it. My friends and family didnt believe in me. Well, Im happy to say I proved them all wrong. I spent three months living out of a carry-on and I didnt need to buy new clothes even once. I was about to embark on a three-month journey that would take me from Orange County to New York City to Pittsburgh to Stockholm, then back to Pittsburgh, and finally home to Orange County. I knew I wouldnt want to be weighed down by heavy baggage over the following months and I also was leid eager to check bags - and pay fees - for the 10 different flights I would be taking. Hence my journey began with a single carry-on filled to the brim with the bare minimum. How I did itCredit where credit is due, I dont think I could have done it without my Away carry-on. Seriously, that bag can squeeze in a lot of clothes. I was able to fit two pair s of shoes, three pairs of pants, a dozen T-shirts and tank tops, three dresses, a bikini, shorts, two sweaters, two sweatshirts, undergarments, pajamas, and was even able to bring my hair straightener along for the ride. It may have been a team effort at times to actually zip it, but it did the trick. When it came time to pack, I basically created a travel capsule wardrobe. I could only bring one pair of tennis shoes, one sandal that worked for the beach and walking around, and one pair of slightly dressy shoes. Because my shoe options were so limited, I knew everything I brought with me had to match them the saatkorn theory applied to pants. I had one pair of jeans, one nicer non-denim pant, and one pair of workout leggings. This meant that all tops had to work with those pants. When packing, I mapped out a color scheme (neutrals for the most part) and chose items that could be dressed up or down like camisoles and classic button-downs. I also only packed items I absolutely loved. It was pretty easy to make do with my limited wardrobe when it was all my favorite styles. What I LearnedBecause I wouldnt have room in my luggage to bring anything home with me after the trip, shopping basically became a no-go. This meant that I was able to worry less about trying to find the perfect souvenir or chic outfit while traveling. I also had no choice but to ignore many alluring sale alerts from my favorite brands. Of course, there were temptations, but I really wasnt able to act on them. Before I left on this journey, I was shopping in person or online pretty frequently. Even though I often didnt make a purchase, I spent a lot of time hoping to find the perfect styles. What I realized during my forced shopping freeze was that I already had so many clothes that I loved. I found other non-shopping related ways to fill my time and found I was more active and read more frequently. Less time scrolling for style inspiration on Instagram meant more time practicing my French voc abulary. My Closet TodayBefore my travels began, I was curious to see what effect wearing the same outfits day after day would have on my personal style. To my surprise, when I came home, I was totenstill primarily reaching for the same clothes Id packed on my trip. Over the years Ive allowed social media or trends to dictate my style choices and my wardrobe wasnt as cohesive as I wanted it to be. Now I know with absolute certainty what works for me. Classic button downs, simple sweaters, anything navy or dove grey, straight legged pants, chunky sandals, high necklines, and a good trench coat are all likely to make the cut.How Ive ChangedFor me, shopping was just a habit I formed over time and was fueled by not wanting to miss a great deal or turning it into a social outing. Fortunately, I had three months to beat my bad habit. I still enjoy shopping, but its not my go-to anymore. Ive been home for longer than I was gone and Im proud to say the only thing Ive bought was three more of the exact T-shirt I wore nonstop over the summer during a Black Friday sale. I know I wasnt really spending much money while shopping and even though Id often come home from the mall empty-handed, I still felt the desire to go. Now that desire is pretty non-existent. Do I want shiny new things? Of course. But would I rather meet my best friend for a walk or spend an afternoon at home with my family than go shopping? Absolutely. This article originally appeared on The Everygirl.

Questions in Job Interviews for Custodian Positions

Questions in Job Interviews for Custodian PositionsQuestions in Job Interviews for Custodian PositionsCustodians, also calledjanitors, areresponsible formaintaining public or private spaces such as schools, stores, or office buildings.Custodians clean these spaces, but they also maintain equipment, alone or on teams. Some custodians work primarily whenother employeesare no longer in the building, but others may frequently interact with employees and the public. Whenpreparing to be bewerbungsbewerberinterviewedfor acustodianposition, you will want to do everything you can to show the interviewer your attention to detail and custodial knowledge. Expect questions about how you have cared for equipment, how you clean, and how you havesolved problemsin your previous experience. As you prepare, have a look at this list of frequently asked interview questions for custodiansand practice your answers in advance. The Motivation Behind the Questions Do you have any custodial experience? Cus todial work requires a complete understanding of cleaning equipment and strategies. Share with the interviewer any prior experience you have that is relevant to this position. How do you stay motivated during repetitive tasks? The interviewer wants to know that the quality of your work will remain consistent in spite ofits repetitive nature. What has been your worst custodial experience? The interviewer knows that you will encounter occasional obstacles. Share an unpleasant experience ora time when something didnt go as plannedand explain how you handled the situation. Other Common Questions Are you comfortable working night shifts?Do you have the flexibility to work overtime or on weekends? Are you able to lift heavy items and remain on your feet for a large portion of your shift? What certifications do you have? What certifications would you like to earn?Do you have specific training in handling and disposing of hazardous materials? How often do you clean your cleaning implements? Describe your methods of cleaning. How do you perform quality control in your work?Do you prefer working alone or on a team? Why? Tell me about a time when you had to use your own initiative to solve a problem at work because your supervisor was unavailable. What happened, and what was the result? What kind of supervisor do you prefer to work with? What would you do if you encountered a customer who believed you had done something incorrectly?Describe a time when you had to deal with a difficult member of the public. What happened? How did you handle the situation? How did you fill downtime at your previous job?Why did you leave your previous job? Tell me about a time when you couldnt repair a specific piece of equipment. What happened? How did you handle it?How would you answer if you were being asked to do something that wasnt on your list of job responsibilities? If I were to ask a previous employer to describe your personality or work ethic in three words, what would they be?What do you believe to be your greatest strength as an employee? Your greatest weakness? Custodian Skills List During your interview, be prepared to mention the specific janitorial skills that you can offer an employer. These might include administrative skills like record keeping, scheduling, and supply ordering, mechanical skills such as carpentry, painting, and plumbing, and basic cleaning skills like mopping, waxing, chemical use, and waste disposal. Employers will also want to know if you have good interpersonal skills such as oral communications, customer relations, and teamwork. Preparing for your Interview Particularly if you are the sort of person who gets nervous in interviews, you should take some time to prepare for the interview and practice your answers to these questions ahead of time. This is a great way to ensure that you dont become tongue-tied during the actual interview. The best way to do this is to recruit a friend willing to role-play the part of the intervie wer for you. Lacking this, though, its also effective to talk aloud to your mirror the idea is to be well-rehearsed in your responses before you enter the interview room. On the day of the interview, eat a good and healthy breakfast avoid ingesting too much coffee if it makes you wired. Make sure your interview clothing is clean and presentable a reflection of the tidiness you will be expected to maintain on the employers premises as their custodian. You should also give yourself time to spare when travelling to your interview in case of traffic jams or other delays try to arrive a few minutes early if possible.

Why you miss your deadlines, and what to do about it

Why you miss your deadlines, and what to do about it Why you miss your deadlines, and what to do about it How often do you find yourself racing at the last minute to finish a task?If you’ve ever missed a deadline the planning fallacy may well be the culprit. Most people are more conscious about time and how they use it. They have a better awareness of how much of it they will spend on impending tasks.Others are very prone to be optimistic when ‘budgeting’ it. They display an optimism bias and underestimate the time needed for every task for the day. This is a common pitfall when managing time, called ‘the planning fallacy’.We consistently underestimate how long it will take to write a post, an ebook, record podcast, complete a side project, or hold a meeting. The planning fallacy was first proposed by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky in 1979.This phenomenon can occur regardless of your knowledge that past tasks of a similar nature have taken longer to complete than generally planned.“The more steps you have in whatever project or task you’re working on, the greater the chance that in one of those steps you’re going to hit a snag and it’s going to turn out to be atypical,” writes Julia Galef of Big Think.Planning fallacy is one of the most common and consistently demonstrated cognitive biases. For example, a house can only be built on time if there are no delivery delays, no employee absences, no hazardous weather conditions, etc.Even if each hurdle is unlikely, there is a high probability that at least one will occur. In every project, people rarely consider the what ifs, which is why they underestimate their task completion times. The good news is that being aware of how cognitive biases affect you can help you be on the lookout for them, and change your behaviour to compensate.Resist the tyranny of the urgentAccording to research, bite-sized tasks and interruptions can disrupt concentration for up to half an hour.Urgency wrecks productivity. Your ability to distinguish urgent and important tasks has a lot to do with your success.Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “What is important is seldom urgent and what is urgent is seldom important.”Urgent tasks require your immediate attention: phone calls, meetings, tasks with tight deadlines, and other issues that require you to take action quickly.Important tasks help advance long-term goals and complete serious projects. They are tasks that actually push the needle. But unfortunately, we tend to put important tasks aside and deal with the urgent tasks that provide a rapid sense of accomplishment but doesn’t help advance long-term goals.Kat Boogaard of Trello explains, “Our brains have the not-so-helpful tendency to conflate real, productive work with those other small, menial, and mindless tasks. By totally pushing those out of your mind (and off your to-do list) for now, you won’t be tempted to color code your inbox when you should actually be completing that presentation that’s due in two hours.”Learn to limit the amount of time you’re wasting on non-urgent/non-importan t tasks. The fundamental approach to solving this vicious circle of work is to understand the difference between urgent tasks and important tasks.Break big tasks into smaller piecesThe more steps your task or project involves, the more opportunities there are for something to go wrong. When you are making predictions, pay attention to the steps you need to take, and not just the outcome.People who procrastinate often feel overwhelmed and the task seems insurmountable.By breaking a bigger project into smaller tasks, the work is more manageable and less intimidating.Think of each component that is involved in the process, and allocate time for it to be completed.Examine the parts of any task, and figure out step-by-step what you need to do to get it done.Create a timeline for completing your tasks. Having a deadline will make you more focused for each task.Give yourself 30 minutes to complete something or an hour. If the task is too large to complete in an hour, break it into smaller ta sks, and time box those smaller tasks. To help you stick with your new work hours, set appointments for 30 minutes after you’re supposed to get off work. So if you tell yourself you’re absolutely going to leave work at 5 p.m. (or even better, at 3 p.m.), set an appointment for 5:30 p.m. and stick to it.Set a hard deadline.Set a specific goal for the end of that length of time, and set it in stone. If you set a tighter deadline for each of your tasks today, you’ll be inspired to find the most productive way to meet those deadlines and get your work done.Make a list of the tasks you need to accomplish by close of day today. Then, think about how much time it will take to accomplish each of those tasks.Once you begin your work, you’ll find you’re in a race against the clock. That’s exactly what you want because it will inspire you to get it done. When you’re done, take a look back and see how you’ve fared. Measure your progress and improve accordingly.Did you inflate the ti me required for some tasks? There may be some tasks that you simply can’t cut hours on or some that you can cut even more time from.Adjust your schedule to work better, faster and smarter.Use the Pomodoro techniqueBegin tracking your time to get a more realistic handle on how long specific projects and tasks take you. That can easily override your optimism bias and keep your expectations in check. The Pomodoro technique teaches us to work with time, instead of struggling against it. It can help you power through distractions and get things done in short bursts. The Pomodoro Technique, strictly about time-management was developed by Italian entrepreneur Francesco Cirillo. He created this simple study habit (when he was still a college student in the late 1980s) to maximize his productivity and reduce a feeling of burnout. It focuses on working in short, intensely focused bursts (20/30/40 minutes), and then giving yourself a brief break to recover and start over. The technique requires a timer, and it allows you to break down your large complex task into manageable intervals.Once you start a task, you aim to finish it before attending to urgent but unimportant tasks.Beware of “time bullies”When you are on the clock or supposed to be working, your time is for your work. Protect it.Say no more often.”Saying “No” means you have time to focus on your own creation, tasks and projects, rather than responding and reacting to requests. In the words of Paulo Coelho: “When you say YES to others, make sure you are not saying NO to yourself.”Don’t get suckered into tasks you don’t have time for.Saying No is hard, but it means you say Yes to focus and sanity. Use your power of choice to say “Yes” or “No” when you mean it.Key takeawayFalling into the planning fallacy can make you feel overloaded. If you are able to recognize and address this issue before it gets out of hand, you will be less likely to allow it to impact your success.Human judgment sucks.D on’t rely on your personal, subjective judgment of how long something is likely to take or how involved it will be because that’s likely to suck.Measure and compare. How well did past projects performed in terms of their PLAN versus the ACTUAL time it took to complete? What went well? What didn’t go so well? What can you do differently next time? Rely on evidence.Track your progress and base your decisions on past evidence.Dig deeperIf you enjoyed this post, you will love Postanly Weekly, my free weekly digest of the best posts about behavior change that affect health, wealth, and productivity. Protein-Based Sensors Attack Cancer

Protein-Based Sensors Attack Cancer Protein-Based Sensors Attack Cancer Protein-Based Sensors Attack Cancer Molecular engineering and synthetic biology have advanced to the stage where a wide range of proteins can be engineered to recognize and bind to virtually any DNA sequence. This ability has been, so far, used mostly for genome editing. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, however, have developed a unique use for these designable DNA-binding proteins: programming them to detectspecific DNA sequences, such as pathogen-related DNA, which then activates a customized cellular response, such as cell death. The research team, led by James Collins, a professor of medical engineering and science at MITs Department of Biological Engineering and Institute of Medical Engineering and Science, and postdoctoral associate Shimyn Slomovic, published their results in a recent issue ofNature Methods. One might compare it to an alarm system that is equipped to contact security for a smart response when an intruder is detected, states Slomovic. How It Works This cellular detection system uses a type of DNA-binding protein known as zinc fingers, which can be programmed to recognize any DNA sequence. The team then built in an action response that is triggered by the recognition event. At left, cells glow red to indicate that the detection system has been successfully delivered. The system was designed to produce green fluorescence in cells carrying a viral DNA sequence, as seen at right. Image: Shimyn Slomovic Synthetic zinc fingers derived from mammalian proteins were combined with intein proteins derived from yeast (inteins are short proteins that can be inserted into larger proteins, splitting them in half). The split protein pieces only become functional after the intein removes itself, allowing the two parts to join together and form a functional protein, which then activates a designated gene. A fluorescent protein (GFP) derived from jellyfish was linked to the zinc fingers recognition of a DNA sequence from an adenovirus; cell infected with this virus would then glow green. At the onset of the study, we envisioned a platform that was sufficiently robust to operate in a human cell, yet also specific enough to distinguish between a pathogen DNA target and the normal genome present in the cell, says Slomovic. It was exciting to reach a point in which the system could positively identify and report the infection of live replicating adenovirus inside living cells. Infected cells could also be killed. The system was programmed to produce proteins that alert immune cells to fight the infection (instead of simply identifying them by using GFP). Detection of the DNA target was linked to increased production of an enzyme called NTR. This enzyme activates a harmless drug precursor called CB 1954, which the researchers added to the petri dish where the cells were growing. When activated by NTR, CB 1954 kills the cells. Since this is modular, you can potentially evoke any response that you want, says Slomovic. The cell can be programmed to kill itself, or to secrete proteins that will allow the immune system to identify it as an enemy cell so the immune system can take care of it. Future Applications Collins and Slomovic are now adapting their technology to detect latent HIV proviruses, which remain dormant in some infected cells even after treatment. Latent HIV provirus is pretty much the final barrier to curing AIDS, which currently is incurable simply because the provirus sequence is there, dormant, and there arent any ways to eradicate it, Slomovic says. Another possible use of this system would be assisting in the production of cell lines that scientists have engineered to contain critical genomic edits, such as resistance to HIV infection. Positive cells could be rapidly identified, streamlining this process. We also think the platform could be used to detect RNA-based viruses or used for diagnostics in patient samples. In the near-term, however, perhaps the most immediate use of the system will be as a diagnostic tool that allows researchers to verify the results of experiments that are attempting to genetically alter types of cellular material. Yet another application would be keeping bioreactors free from pathogens. Many important therapeutic drugs and vaccines are generated in large bioreactors in which mammalian cells are cultured to produce large quantities, adds Slomovic. Bioreactors are susceptible to pathogen infection and a DNA sense-and-respond system could help arm these valuable cells with ways to prevent or contain such infections. Mark Crawford is an independent writer. Explore the latest trends in bioengineering at ASMEs Global Congress on NanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology. For Further Discussion The cell can be programmed to kill itself, or to secrete proteins that will allow the immune system to identify it as an enemy cell so the immune system can take care of it.Shimyn Slomovic, postdoctoral associate, MIT

How to upgrade your subconscious normal every 90 days

How to upgrade your subconscious 'normal' every 90 days How to upgrade your subconscious 'normal' every 90 days “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” - Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.Your “normal” life reflects the level of your subconscious mind.Your subconscious determines 95% percent of your behavior. Those behaviors happen, primarily, without you having to think much about it.Your normal life is what is happening right now, as you read these words. It’s what feels predictable. It’s what feels comfortable. It’s what feels “normal.”Your environment supports your “normal” lifeYour external environment is the ultimate feedback loop. It is telling you, very clearly, what is “normal” to you.You want to know what your subconscious mind is up to, and where it is at?What is “normal” to you? What is around and outside of you? That’s your subconscious reality.Ideally, when you examine your environment, you should experience gratitude, confidence, and a little bit of angst. Gratitude for everything in your life, knowing that everything is ultimately a gift and that life is increasingly abundant. Confidence in everything around you, because your current environment is EVIDENCE that you are making tangible progress. Your current normal is far superior to your prior normal. Angst about how things could change and improve. Despite being incredibly grateful and present to your current reality, you also have big things to do and places to go. You refuse to get stuck at any conscious level. You’re always advancing forward. What is “normal” for you right now? What does your current normal life look and feel like? How much money are you currently making? How healthy is your current body? How powerful are your current relationships?Who is your current peer group? You are the product of your peer group. Your peer group is reflecting back to you the level of your subconscious evolution. How advanced are the people around you? What do their daily behaviors reflect about you, and your standards? How interesting are the conversations you have? How challenging are the projects you’re working on?How big is the future you’re striving for?How to upgrade your “normal” every 90 daysDan Sullivan, the founder of Strategic Coach, has four very simple and powerful questions to ask yourself every 90 days.Start by answering these 4 questions: “Winning Achievements? Looking back over the past quarter, what are the things that make you the proudest about what you have achieved?” “What’s Hot? When you look at everything that’s going on today, which areas of focus and progress are making you the most confident?” “Bigger and Better? Now, looking ahead at the next quarter, what new things are giving you the greatest sense of excitement?” “What are the five new ‘jumps’ you can now achieve that will make your next 90 days a great quarter regardless of what else happens?” Start by answering those questions. Why are these questions so important? To start, your confidence as a person - which reflects your ability to take on big new challenges and grow as a person - is determined by your recent prior behavior. In other words, you may have had some big wins a few years ago, but if you’re not making big progress RECENTLY, then you won’t have confidence. If you haven’t made big progress recently, then you’re likely living in your past. You probably reference your past regularly in attempts of validating that you are a successful or smart person. But truthfully, you cannot have confidence if you haven’t done something significant in the past 90 days. However, if you have been making progress in the past 90 days, then your CURRENT REALITY will provide evidence of that. Your environment will be different, reflecting a new normal. How does this work?Start engaging in “subconscious enhancing behaviors” daily Every decision you make signals back to yourself the type of person you are. Your identity is extremely fluid and malleable. It’s constantly updating itself based on your experiences and choices. When you eliminate negative choices and increasingly make better and more goal-directed ones, your identity updates itself. Put simply, there are three types of behaviors: Subconscious supporting behaviors: these are behaviors that reflect your current “normal.” These are the behaviors that 1) don’t involve much risk, 2) don’t create much emotion, and 3) are supported by your current environment. This is your status-quo. Subconscious defeating behaviors: these are behaviors that are below your current “normal,” which actually devolve you as a person. For example, you may have a certain level of physical fitness that requires a specific amount of nutrition and exercise. If you eat food beneath your current level of health, that is a subconscious defeating behavior - unless it is done extremely intentionally, in which case it could be a subconscious enhancing behavior. Subconscious enhancing behaviors: these are behaviors that shatter your current sense of “normal.” In other words, these are behaviors that are not reflective of your prior behavior and your current environment. These are behaviors up a level or two from how you normally operate. How many subconscious enhancing behaviors do you perform on a daily basis? When was the last time you did a workout that totally shocked your system, in a good way? When was the last time you said “No” to the junk food you didn’t really want in the first place? When was the last time you got up early and immediately began working on your #1 priority? When was the last time you pursued your lover like they weren’t already yours? When was the last time you acted FROM your ideal future, as opposed to operating from your current reality? What could you do, today, that would reflect the future you intend to inhabit?Delete everything from your current reality that isn’t a “HELL YES”“You cannot overestimate the unimportance of practically everything.” - John C. MaxwellThere are two very simple tests (which I’ll share with you in a second) that you can perform to determine where you’re wasting your time. It’s important to realize that at least 80% of the things you’re cur rently doing are keeping you where you currently are. There are only a handful of things you’re currently doing that will move you forward. What do I mean by this? The behaviors that got you here are not the behaviors that will get you where you want to go.A “normal” day for you right now may reflect an absolutely mind-blowing day 2â€"3 years ago.As a fun example, my wife, Lauren, is about to have twins in less than 4 weeks. My “normal” is about to radically adjust. And to me, that’s quite exciting. However, it’s very important to note that, even though my current “normal” behaviors are far upgraded to my “normal” behaviors 2â€"3 years ago, that I can’t continue to engage in my current “normal” behaviors if I intend on 10X’ing my life again and again.Which brings me to the 2 exercises. 80/20 your life: You need to take a hard look at your life right now. What are the few things that are currently pulling you forward? Who are the few people that remind you more of your future than your past or current reality? Are you willing to take the big step forward and delete the behaviors and activities and relationships that reflect a “normal” reality that is no longer interesting compared to where you plan on going? “HELL YES” or “No”: This is a simple test developed by Derek Sivers which you need to engage in every 90 days. As you continue to become more successful in your life, there will be increasing noise and confusion that attracts itself to you. You’ll need to become better and better at only pursuing those things which completely align with the future you want to create. You must say NO to almost everything and advance deeply in those things which will create a 10X or 100X impact in the near and long-term future. What may have been in the 20% that was rocking your world may now be in the 80%, keeping you stuck. What got you here won’t get you there.Choose the results economy:“Crave the result so intensely that the work is irrelevant.” - Tim GroverAccording to Dan Sullivan, you are either operating in one of two economies: The results economy The time and effort economy In the results economy, you are willing to do whatever it takes to get the result you want. To quote Jim Rohn, “The bigger the ‘why’ the easier the ‘how.’”When your WHY is hot and clear and compelling, you’re fine engaging in behaviors and activities that, in the moment, are not necessarily fun and enjoyable. You’re fine doing the grueling work of getting better, or failing, or asking for help. You’re fine facing the emotional shock of trying something new and bold and innovative. You’re not attached to the outcomes of your performance. You’re completely fluid and adaptive and flexible. Come what may and love it.You’re completely committed to a specific result and purpose - but you have no pride or attachment to the outcomes and emotional experiences you have along the way. When you attempt big and bold strategies to move toward your goals - you don’t suppress your emotions. You connect to them, you appreciate them, and you acknowledge them. But you don’t let them stop you. Instead, you allow those emotions to remain a part of the current situation as you proactively move toward the goal of your desire. You don’t avoid hard emotional experiences. You don’t ignore and suppress you emotions. You live with them. You experience them. But you don’t allow them to stop you.You move the direction of your biggest goals and values, knowing that eventually your body and mind will adapt, and that the intense emotional experience you’re having will subside - adjusting itself to a new “normal.”Your subconscious is upgrading itself.Your standards for yourself are elevating.Your daily behavior and results are improving.Your environment has changed - the ultimate feedback loop. You no longer tolerate low-level, lame, and uninteresting conversations or projects.Yet, you know how quickly you’ll adjust to this new normal - no matter how great it is compared to your past. And you are committed to never stopping. While most people care more abou t their status, you care more about your growth. You’re committed to growing and disrupting what is normal. You’re always innovating and improving and changing.Indeed, Albert Einstein said it best: “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.”Invest in yourself: Your current sense of “normal” is what you presently believe you deserve. You level of your subconscious mind is your current standard of your own self-worth.What do you deserve? What level of happiness? What level of connection to your higher power? What level of income? What level of learning? What level of connection and contribution? What level of depth? The fastest way to shatter your subconscious sense of what you “deserve” is to invest in yourself. When you spend money on your goals and dreams - you are signaling to yourself that you deserve more than you presently have. You are no longer satisfied with what you have. You are committed to something bigger.People will spend money on entertainment and junk food and distractions all day, but they won’t invest in subconscious enhancing experiences. What would happen if you hired a personal trainer?Would you see that as a cost or an investment? What would happen if you hired a mentor or a private coach or joined a mastermind?Would you see that as a cost or an investment? If you see things as a cost, then you have a victim mentality. You want other people to do the work for you. When you see things as an investment, then you realize that you have the power to create you own experience. You know that by investing in yourself and experiencing the growth, that you’re upgrading your sense of “normal” life.Do you deserve a personal trainer? Or is that frivolous?Do you deserve to have a private coach? Or is that something maybe for a few years down the road?Do you deserve to be making 10X the money you currently are?Well how do you think you’ll get to that level, when you continue to operate daily with behaviors that reflect your current reality? The only way to scale your subconscious mind upward is by INVESTING big in your future now.Nothing is a cost.Everything is an investment to those who are growth-oriented.Every relationship is an investment.Every decision is an investment.Every moment is an investment, because all of these things are pulling you forward with compound interest toward the future you’ve already committed to.You cannot be committed without investment. Your fear of looking stupid is making you look stupid

Your fear of looking stupid is making you look stupid Your fear of looking stupid is making you look stupid According to psychological research, the greatest emotional need is security.Who doesn’t want to be liked?Yet, trying to be liked and living in alignment with your goals and values often conflict. That is if you’re trying to be liked by everyone.John Lennon once said, “Trying to please everybody is impossible - if you did that, you’d end up in the middle with nobody liking you. You’ve just got to make the decision about what you think is your best, and do it.”Wanting approval and needing approval are two very different things. We all want approval. But when you need it: You come off as desperate You say “yes” to stuff that clearly doesn’t resonate You lack an internal compass Your relationships are co-dependent, one-sided, surface-level, and bound to fall apart at some future point Your need for approval has you eating unhealthy foods you don’t want to eat.It has you working on projects you’re not excited about. It has you ruminating and obsessing about problems and regrets you could easily remove or fix.Joyce Meyer, in her book, Approval Addiction: Overcoming Your Need to Please Everyone, explains that the need for approval stems from insecurity, which is often the product of some form of abuse - physical, verbal or emotional. The addiction for approval is fueled by unhealthy emotions: guilt shame anger None of these emotions are a healthy foundation for creating relationships with yourself or other people. If you want to live a life of purpose, you’ll need to let go of your need for approval. You’ll need to be willing to follow your gut. To express your views. To be honest…Healthy relationships involve conflict and differencesWhere are you NEEDING approval in unhealthy ways?It is there if you’ll be honest with yourself. Rather than sending a text or email, actually call or meet with that person. Muster the courage to have a real conversation and express your feelings. This is practice. But it’s also self-care and self-love. If you truly love and respect yourself, you’ll deal with the difficult emotions of learning to honestly express yourself. If you do not do this, you will inevitably repeat the pattern in the future.Your time on this planet is very brief. It shouldn’t be spent doing what you hate. It shouldn’t be lived in fear of what others think.Relationships can be so deep and genuine and real. Conflict, it turns out, is one of the surest paths to intimacy. When two people feel safe and comfortable in a relationship, they’re willing to have honest and sometimes difficult conversations. They’re willing to disagree. They don’t have to see eye-to-eye on all things. In fact, they shouldn’t.When conflict arises, it’s not about the relationship, but about getting clarity and moving forward with whatever they are working on.Your “security” should be internal“An abundance mentality springs from internal security, not from external rankings, comparisons, opinions, possessions, or associations.” -  Stephen R. CoveySecurity is the greatest human need. Yet, security should be internal. Even when things are falling apart externally, you need to be willing to trust yourself. Of course, you need good friends to help and support you. But until your security is internal, you’ll never be able to be fully honest in your relationships in th e first place. You’ll be tossed to and fro with every external situation around you.You can’t actually give genuine service or gifts if you’re desperately needing approval from others. Because anything you give to them is really to gain something for yourself - approval. It’s desperate and unhealthy.Hence, Covey explained that abundance comes from being internally secure. As Jody Williamson, one of the top salesmen in the United States, teaches his employees, you must believe you are independently wealthy, and that you don’t NEED this particular prospect. When you truly believe and know you are fine and secure without THIS relationship or THIS opportunity, then you can act honestly and genuinely. You won’t come off desperate. If it doesn’t work out, you’ll keep going. Life is fine. Ironically, this is also how to get into a flow, be present, and perform at your highest level.Only in this way will you attract the opportunities and relationships that resonate with the pe rson you intend to become. It’s okay to “look” stupid at 99% of life“Your fear of looking stupid is making you look stupid.” -  RuPualHilariously, people avoid asking for advice because they don’t want to look incompetent. Yet, research from Harvard Business School found that when you ask people for help, directions, or advice, it actually makes other people believe you’re MORE competent. If you tell people, “no,” they’ll be initially hurt but will respect you more.Memory is very short (this will be forgotten)“Short-term memory has a fairly limited capacity; it can hold about seven items for no more than 20 or 30 seconds at a time.” -  Science.howstuffworksPeople have very short memories. Almost every experience you have you’ll permanently forget within 30 seconds. Like, you’ll never recall it.Think about all the things you’ve done today. Most of it you’ll never recall. When you ask someone for advice, they’ll quickly forget about it.When you get rej ected by someone, they’ll quickly forget it. As will you. When you reject an opportunity, both of you will likely forget about it.The point is, seeking the wrong approval is extremely costly. And avoiding the wrong approval is very cheap. Because if you do it kindly, the relationship will actually be strengthened, and both parties will quickly forget about it anyways.Seeking the wrong “Golden Stars”“Who is giving you stupid Gold Stars in life? And what are they costing you?” -  Craig BallantyneNeeding approval puts you in a position of seeking the wrong “golden stars,” in life.Does it feel good to have someone’s approval? Of course. But it also feels terrible getting the wrong people’s approval because you’re internally conflicted. In such cases, you actually resent the person you’re seeking approval from. How messed-up is this?Rather than seeking “stupid” golden stars of approval, Craig Ballantyne recommends asking yourself: Who should I be seeking approval from? Who are the people I really want to be serving? Who are the people I really want to be working with? You can’t please everyone. If a writer tries to please everyone, they will have no audience. If a person tries to please everyone, they will have no genuine relationships. All relationships will be transactions. Conversely, transformational relationships can only happen when all parties are “givers,” who genuinely want to be there and are not constantly keeping score. All parties need to be healthily independent of the relationship so they can create interdependence where transformation and growth can happen.Quantity is the path to quality“It’s better to be prolific than perfect.” -  Joe PolishIf you want to get good at something, you can’t NEED approval from other people. The people who matter will love you anyways. You’re going to need to fail a lot.In the book Originals, Adam Grant explains that “originals” (i.e., people who create innovative work) are not reliable. In other words, not everything they produce is extraordinary. For example, among the 50 greatest pi eces of music ever created, six belong to Mozart, five are Beethoven’s, and three Bach’s. But in order to create those, Mozart wrote over 600 songs, Beethoven 650, and Bach over 1,000.Similarly, Picasso created thousands of pieces of art, and few are considered to be his “great works.” Edison had 1,900 patents, and only a handful we would recognize. Albert Einstein published 248 scientific articles, only a few of which are what got him on the map for his theory of relativity. If Mozart was concerned about the approval of others for every piece he wrote, he wouldn’t have written so many. His perfectionism would have created procrastination.Perfectionism isn’t about you. It’s about an unhealthy need for approval. It’s about a fear of failure and looking incompetent. It’s the opposite of courage. And it’s the opposite of mastery. This article originally appeared on Medium.

7 Points of a TV Contract to Review Before You Sign

7 Points of a TV Contract to Review Before You Sign 7 Points of a TV Contract to Review Before You Sign TV contracts used to be reserved for the top news anchors in the countrys largest designated  market areas (DMA) and at the networks. Thats no longer the case. The market for experienced workers has become so competitive that stations are requiring most of their staff to sign contracts, even for those working behind the scenes. By knowing the seven basics of a TV contract before signing, you can be confident that the deal is right for you or better prepare yourself on ?how to negotiate for more. 01 Term of the Deal Noel Hendrickson / Getty Images Sometimes, contracts are broken long before they expire. There should be consequences for either side in doing so.If a station decides that you just arent working out (but you have not broken the morals clause), you should receive severance pay. That amount will vary depending on your salary and the length of time youve been an employee.Your ability to break the contract will likely be much more limited. You can try to negotiate an out clause in case your dream job opens up in a much bigger city with a fatter paycheck, but get it in writing.TV contracts are a standard part of the industry. They shouldnt frighten you if you read them thoroughly and understand the requirements. If in doubt, have an attorney check them out.

Will All Workers Need a Degree To Land a Job in 2020

Will All Workers Need a Degree To Land a Job in 2020 Will All Workers Need a Degree To Land a Job in 2020 Of course, there are many massively successful business people who dont have degrees such as: Bill Gates, the late Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, Michael Dell, Duskin Moskovitz (Facebook founder), Pete Cashmore (Mashable Founder), David Karp (Tumblr), and the list goes on. But, lets not kid ourselves; these people are exceptions who didnt land jobs but created them. The reality is that 21 percent of all jobs and an even higher percentage of career jobs need a degree in todays climate. According to research by Georgetown University, by 2020, 24 percent of all jobs are expected to require a bachelors degree. This means that on an aggregated basis, 47 percent of jobs will require some form of degree (associates, bachelors or masters), and if a job seeker is looking to land a serious career job in 2020 he or she will need to have some form of degree. And any job seeker who currently holds an associates or bachelors degree, might want to consider upgrading his or her degree to the next level available to remain competitive in the job market. This is a summary of the Georgetown University Report findings on 2020 degree requirements for a job: 6.6 million (or 12 percent of all jobs) will need less than high school education 13.2 million (24 percent) will need only a high school diploma 9.8 million (18 percent) will need some college experience (no degree) 6.6 million (12 percent) will require an associate degree 13.2 million (24 percent) will require a bachelor’s degree 6.0 million, (11 percent) will require a master’s degree or better. So, it does appear that workers will need at least an associates degree to land their dream job and climb the career ladder to success in 2020. Of course, there are some caveats as shown by the SMB Wellness study 2013, reported by Forbes, which showed that 50 percent of small businesses had hired staff that didnt have a college degree and 62 percent had not experienced any difference in performance between graduates and non-graduates. This means that if non-graduates focus their career around small businesses and stay away from large corporates and governmental organizations they may still find it reasonably practicable to land a career job in 2020 â€" even though they dont have a degree. But, its pretty clear that if  workers want to have the full access to the job market in 2020 and maximize their chance of career success, they will need a degree. This does not mean that there are no other alternatives to the degree route to a career. As I showed before, there is an army of successful entrepreneurs without a degree who have succeeded based on their skills experience alone. And while the average entrepreneur may not mimic the success of Zuckerberg and co., there is a growing marketplace for freelancers, contractors and entrepreneurs where there is far more emphasis on ability to deliver than there is on education.
